Bloomfield Public Schools this week presented the board of education with a proposed 2022-23 operations budget of $50.35 million – a 7.7% increase over the current year’s budget.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Thompson, Jr. said just about all of the projected increases are attributed to:

Rising tuition costs for students who are attending out- of- district magnet schools and schools for children with special learning needs. (3.17%)

Bargaining unit contractual obligations (2.52%)

Student Transportation (1.28%)

“This budget proposal reflects our commitment to supporting the whole student by creating avenues for growth and achievement,” Thompson said. “As always, the budget- preparation process was undertaken by aligning resources to support students and their academic achievement. We focused on the following objectives – no services or programs would be eliminated; reasonable class sizes would be maintained; and a concerted effort would be made to acquire additional grants and resources.”

The school board will be conducting budget workshops on the budget before voting on the spending plan Thursday, Feb. 24. If approved by the board, the proposal will then be presented to the town council Thursday, March 10. The town council must approve all annual school budgets.
