The Harris Agriscience Center at Bloomfield High School recently conducted an Agriculture Field Day for 310 Pre-K to Grade 2 Laurel Elementary School students.
The two-day event was designed to introduce children to the world of agriculture, marine biology, reptiles, plants and farm animals in a fun and engaging way. BHS students served as mentors and teachers to the Laurel students, as they developed a better understanding of the important roles that animals and wild life play in the ecosystem.
Students learned about – and were able to interact with – a variety of animals, such as goats, chickens, rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas and guinea pigs. The Agriculture Field Day enabled children to appreciate the diversity of animals and understand their significance in providing society with food and other essential products. Also discussed was the connection between
sustainable agriculture and everyday live.
This event is part of the Center’s efforts to provide AgriScience education throughout the Pre-K to Grade 12 district.
Another highlight of the Field Day was the police-dog demonstration by officers from Bloomfield, West Hartford and Simsbury police departments. They showcased the skills of their trained K-9 partners to a captive audience. The demonstrations taught the children the value of communication between animals and humans - and how dogs can also play a role in agriculture, such as herding and protecting livestock.
